Community Lenten services set to begin Wednesday

Lent is a time of prayer, penance and sacrifice in preparation for the Easter season. And, once again, people in Wayne County will join together to celebrate Lent at special community services. The services will start Wednesday and go through April 4.

This year's Lent services will be held at noon at First Presbyterian Church. Offerings taken during each service will be given to Christ Outreach and United Church Ministries.

Following the 30-minute service, lunch will be served.

Services will be:

* Feb. 22 -- The Rev. Drew Clark, First Presbyterian Church, will be the preacher, and bishop Anthony Slater, Tehillah Church Ministries, will be the liturgist. Lunch will be provided by First Presbyterian Church. Scripture will be Isaiah 53:3 and Matthew 26:37-38.

* Feb. 29 -- Bishop Dennis Golpin will be the preacher, and the Rev. Joann Turner will be the liturgist. Lunch will be provided by Tehillah Ministry and St. Mark Church of Christ. Scripture will be Isaiah 53:5 and Matthew 27:26-30.

* March 7 -- The Rev. Bob Fulkerson, Madison Avenue Baptist Church, will be the preacher, and the Rev. Christian Umeofic, African Missions for Christ, will be the liturgist. Lunch will be provided by Madison Avenue Baptist Church. Scripture will be Isaiah 53:7 and Matthew 27:12-14.

* March 14 -- Dr. D.B. Cannon, St. James AME Zion church, will be the preacher, and Lt. Kenny Igleheart, Salvation Army, will be the liturgist. Lunch will be provided by St. James AME Zion Church. Scripture will be Isaiah 53:7 and Matthew 26:57.

* March 21 -- The Rev. Sandy Schaller, Salem United Methodist Church, will be the preacher, and the Rev. Nora Grantham, St. James AME Zion Church, will be the liturgist. Lunch will be provided by Salem United Methodist Church. Scripture will be Isaiah 53:12 and Mark 15:27-28.

* March 28 -- Jessica Davis will be the preacher, and the Rev. Winford Galmon, Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, will be the liturgist. Lunch will be provided by Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Scripture will be Isaiah 53:12 and Luke 23:34.

* April 4 -- Apostle William Barbour, Victory Faith Center, will be the preacher, and the Rev. Carol Pierson will be the liturgist. Lunch will be provided by Victory Faith Center. Scripture will be Psalm 16:9-11 and John 14:18.
