MOUNT OLIVE -- Town board member Kenny Talton will not be able to run for re-election to the board and be a candidate for the Wayne County Board of Commissioners at the same time.

Talton, a Republican, had planned to run for both seats.

However, he has been told by Wayne County Board of Elections officials that a person cannot be a candidate for two different offices that are decided on the same election date.

Talton, who is employed with the city of Goldsboro's inspections department, says he will not seek re-election to the town board and instead will run for the District 2 commission seat held by Democrat J.D. Evans.

Mount Olive's municipal election was to have been held last November, but was delayed until May 8 because of the town's redistricting. May 8 also is the date of the regularly scheduled primary.

"I want to let the people of Mount Olive know how much I appreciate their support over the last seven years as commissioner of the 1st District and as mayor pro tempore for the Town of Mount Olive," Talton said in a prepared statement. "Recently, I have made the decision to concentrate my efforts on serving the citizens of Mount Olive and Wayne County District 2 by solely pursuing the District 2 seat of the Wayne County Board of Commissioners.

"I believe we need a voice on the County Commission to represent the interests and concerns of the people of Mount Olive and the people of southern Wayne County. If elected, I can be that voice."
