A Southern debutante in New York City makes for good fodder, and Jane Borden chronicled that in her first book, which she will discuss this afternoon at Wayne Community College.

Ms. Borden, niece of local businessman Ed Borden, grew up in Greensboro and attended UNC-Chapel Hill, earning a degree in journalism.

The self-described "proper Southern girl" was in a sorority and a debutante but quickly discovered those things didn't translate easily in the big city.

An author, arts and entertainment journalist and comedic performer, while living in New York, she contributed to "Saturday Night Live," New York Times Magazine and the New York Daily News.

She has appeared on Comedy Central and VH1 and was a staff editor at "Time Out New York," interviewing such celebrities as Ricky Gervais and Garrison Keillor.

Her book, "I Totally Meant to do That," was published in March. The anecdotes reflect her experiences as a displaced Southerner and self-proclaimed "hipster-debutante hybrid."

She now lives in rural Tennessee, where her husband is a teacher.

WCC Foundation is hosting her visit to campus this afternoon at 2 p.m. in Room 101 of the Walnut Building. The event is free and open to the public.

A reception will follow the program and copies of her book will also be sold for $15.
