Register of deeds seeking re-election

Wayne County Register of Deeds Lois Mooring will seek a third term in office, she has announced.
Mrs. Mooring, who has served in the position since 2004, said last week she will be filing for re-election when the filing period begins Feb. 13.
Filing for offices up for election this year in Wayne County begins Feb. 13 at noon and continues until noon Feb. 29.
Mrs. Mooring noted changes that have been made in the Register of Deeds office under her direction that have made the office more streamlined and efficient, such as the images of plats being put on the office's website, the office accepting credit-debit card payments, which started in 2010, and the office's participating in the statewide insurance program by which birth certificate requests from other counties can be processed through the Wayne office if the person was born after 1970. That change also was instituted last year.
"I have tried my best to modernize the way things are done, to take advantage of the technology we now have in our office and give good customer service," Mrs. Mooring said in a statement.
Other changes include the downloading of notary oaths as notaries come into the office, which began in August of last year, and the continued purging of old records. Following the retention schedule is key to maintaining records properly, she noted.
Mrs. Mooring also pointed to the cross-training of staff in the office, which helps customers when the office is under-staffed.
"I promise to continue working hard for the citizens of this county and making sure things are as accurate as possible," she said, adding that she enjoys her job, which gives her an opportunity to be part of some of the happiest events in the lives of Wayne residents -- marriages, home ownership and the birth of a child.
