Goldsboro Family YMCA recently received a $42,000 grant to fund a task force that will develop a plan to identify strategies to promote healthier living in Goldsboro.

A team of community leaders traveled to Washington, D.C., last month to participate in YMCA of the United States' Pioneering Healthier Communities Conference. The team, which was brought together by the Goldsboro Family YMCA, heard messages from the U.S. surgeon general and the deputy of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and learned strategies from experts to help combat the obesity problem in Goldsboro by developing a plan to make it easier for community members to engage in more physical activity and eat healthier.

Goldsboro is one of 16 communities chosen to participate in the community-based approach to creating positive efforts.

"The changes need to be sustainable as well as increase the health of our community," said John Richards, CEO of the Goldsboro Family YMCA. "We are in the process of identifying other individuals and organizations to be a part of the task force."
