In the past week, the Goldsboro Fire Department responded to 32 calls, including two house fires, both of which involved a police investigation.
Of the calls made between July 15 and July 21, 10 were false alarms, seven were vehicle accidents, seven were medical assists and two were vehicle fires.
Juvenile started fire
The fire department responded to a house fire at 309 W. Holly St., July 16 at 1:14 p.m., four minutes after receiving the call.
When firefighters arrived, residents of the home were on the front porch and said that they had unsuccessfully tried to extinguish a mattress that had caught fire inside the home.
Firefighters removed the mattress and boxspring from the home and extinguished it in the front yard.
Goldsboro police became involved when a people in the home said a child may have intentionally started the fire.
According to the police report, the juvenile stated that she had been playing with a lighter and the flame caught a blanket on fire while several other children were in the room.
After the fire started, the girl fled the scene and was later found by a family member.
The girl was later charged with fraudulently setting a fire to dwelling house and held at the police department until her legal guardian signed a parental notification form.
Fire under investigation
The second house fire in the week occurred at 508 W. New Hope Road July 17 at 3:48 a.m.
The response time was less than nine minutes.
No one was home at the time of the fire, but a dog was discovered deceased by firefighters during a search.
The origin of the fire was reported as the area where a clothes dryer would have been, but no dryer was in the space.
No heat source was identified by firefighters and the electrical wires in the area did not appear to have shorted out.
The estimated damage in property and contents was reported at $16,000.
The cause of the fire remains undetermined, and the Goldsboro police are conducting an investigation, firefighters said.
Hazardous condition call
Firefighters responded to a hazardous condition call to 106 Industry Court at 1:10 p.m. June 15 to Anchor Coupling, a manufacturing plant for a company that produces hydraulic hose and couplings.
The response time was four minutes.
According to a report, upon arrival, firefighters were told by the plant's safety coordinator a pressure relief valve on an oil/water separator came undone and blew an oil based fog inside the facility.
After entering the facility, firefighters reported seeing a light haze in the air.
Fans were set up to ventilate the area by firefighters. A fire crew was on the scene for approximately one hour and 40 minutes.
Outdoor fire responses
The department responded to two outdoor fires during the week.
On July 16 a mulch fire was extinguished at 100 S. William St., near the Wayne County Courthouse.
A grass fire at U.S. 117 South was also responded to by firefighters on July 19.
Fire officials performed a service call on July 20 by setting up a ladder truck so Goldsboro police officers could search the roof building at 2529 East Ash Street after a robbery occurred at a nearby business.
