An 11-year-old girl was listed in good condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital this morning after being hit by a car while waiting for a school bus.

Christina Wade, a fourth-grader at Northeast Elemen-tary, was standing in the front yard of her home on Brandywine and Saulston roads about 7:20 a.m. when she was struck by a Ford Mustang driven by David Hayes.

Hayes was traveling east on Brandywine Road on his way to work as a maintenance engineering technician at Cherry Hospital when the accident occurred.

"The sun blocked out my windshield. There was still some moisture on it. I couldn't see her. I drifted off the road, and I knocked her over," Hayes said.

Christina was alert and talking before being taken to Wayne Memorial Hospital, said her father, Danny Wade.

"She was scared. Nothing like this has happened to her before," Wade said.

Wade said he was on his way to visit his daughter.

"I am just going to the hospital and try to take care of her," Wade said.

A state trooper with Highway Patrol said charges against Hayes are pending.

Nearly two hours following the incident, an official with Wayne Memorial Hospital said Christina was still being evaluated, but her condition was good.
