School fire

A fire at Greenwood Middle School that reportedly started in a restroom in an auxiliary classroom building soon after 10 a.m. this morning was quickly extinguished by units of the Goldsboro Fire Department.
As of press time, Fire Chief Gary Whaley said the cause of the fire was undetermined and that investigators would stay at the scene to look for evidence.
Students were evacuated when the alarm sounded, but were being shepherded back to their classrooms soon after 10:30 a.m.
Whaley said there were no injuries and that the damage was chiefly confined to smoke damage, which he called "heavy." He said it was too early to estimate the amount of damage to the structure, which is the newest building on the campus on East Ash Street.
The fire did not spread to any other building. School employees said the building in which the fire started is referred to as the "elective building," in which band and other elective classes are taught.
Officials with the Wayne County Schools were on the scene, as well as emergency medical responders.
