Holiday closing schedule announced

Local, state and federal offices will be closed Friday for the New Year's Day holiday. The Postal Service will be closed New Year's Day. Banks will not close for the holiday.

Mt. Olive Pickle Co.'s 12th annual Pickle Drop will be held Friday, starting at 6 p.m. at the corner of Cucumber and Vine streets in Mount Olive. A giant plastic pickle will descend the company flagpole at the stroke of 7 p.m., which is midnight Greenwich Mean Time.

There will be live music, free refreshments, and a canned food drive for the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina. Those who bring donations for the food bank will receive a chance to win door prizes, including a pool pickle like the one the company uses for the Pickle Drop.

People are asked not to take their pets.

All Wayne County offices will be closed Friday and the county landfill will be closed on Saturday as well.

The city of Goldsboro will observe the New Year's Day holiday on Friday. All sanitation services scheduled will be serviced as usual for the city.

Waste Industries collections will not be affected by the holiday.

Town offices in Walnut Creek, Fremont and Pikeville will be closed Friday. The closings will not affect any services in Pikeville and Walnut Creek. However, in Fremont, the Monday garbage collection was moved to Tuesday.

The Eureka Town Hall will not close for New Year's and the holiday will not affect the Seven Springs Town Hall hours.

Offices of the town of Mount Olive will be closed Monday, Jan. 3. The closing will not affect garbage pickup, but the town's recycling center will be closed Saturday.
