State law for operating all-terrain vehicle

State law for operating all-terrain vehicle:

* No riding in public streets - and if caught speeding on a public street, an ATV operator may be charged with speeding.

* No driver's license necessary, but operators must be at least 8 years old.

* Children 8 to 12 years old may operate an ATV with an engine that is less than 70 cubic centimeters displacement (70 cc), but must be supervised by someone 18 or older at all times.

* Children and teens 12 to 16 years old may operate an ATV with an engine that is less than 90 cubic centimeters displacement (90 cc), but must be supervised by someone 18 or older at all times.

* ATV operators of all ages must wear helmets at all times.

Safety tips from

Fun Products, Inc. on Royall Avenue:

* Wear strong shoes, such as boots, and eye protection.

* Maintain the brakes regularly.

* Teach young adults the rules of the road for driving an ATV, available through the ATV Safety Institute.

* Do not drive on pavement, because the vehicle tires are designed to be driven on grass or dirt. Driving on pavement can cause loss of control.

* Never ride double, unless the machine is specifically made for carrying a passenger.
