Firefighters from Arrington, Dudley and Mar-Mac volunteer fire departments answered a call at the Uchiyama America plant Sunday night.

Three fire departments responded to a fire at a manufacturing plant at 494 Arrington Bridge Road late Sunday.

The Arrington Volunteer Fire Department received a call around 7:45 p.m. from a passer-by about a fire occurring at Uchiyama America Inc.

Chief Randy Rogers, of Arrington Fire Department, said the plant's equipment caught fire, not the plant itself.

"Our biggest emphasis was keeping the fire away from the building," Rogers said. "Once we got on the scene, we knocked it right out and kept the fire contained and the damage to a minimum."

Rogers said the plant's equipment which caught fire is used to remove impurities from air burning off of the rubber curing processes.

"Our firefighters did a great job," Rogers said. "They were very professional and worked together in a safe manner."

The volunteer fire departments from Dudley and Mar-Mac also arrived on the scene.

Rogers estimates the incident resulted in $175,000 of property damage.

The plant was not in operation during the incident.
