MOUNT OLIVE - Mount Olive Police made the largest heroin seizure in the town's history Monday night, Chief Ralph Schroeder reported.

Police did not release suspect names or other details in the ongoing investigation, which reportedly turned up 60 "bindles," or small packets of the powdered drug, in a vehicle in Mount Olive.

"During an investigation last night, we recovered 60 bindles of heroin with a street value of about $1,800," Schroeder said. "The investigation is continuing at this time."

The Mount Olive police do not often see heroin trafficking in the town, the chief reported.

The heroin bust was "the biggest I've seen in my career, out of 27 years," Maj. Brian Rhodes said at the town meeting Monday night, where police announced the successful seizure. Schroeder also reported that the investigation had gathered the largest amount of heroin he has seen in the town in his more than 30 years of work with the Mount Olive police force.

Further details will be forthcoming as the investigation progresses, Schroeder said.
