Larry Lean taught students how to make beads out of recycled materials, that could be used to make necklaces and bracelets to sell.

The Occupational Course of Study is one of four courses of study a student with disabilities may complete to graduate with a high school diploma in North Carolina. The program is intended to meet the needs of a small group of students with disabilities who require a greatly modified curriculum that focuses on post-school employment and independent living.

Edna Turner, exceptional children's teacher, said the students were excited about participating in the project, which has also inspired other teachers to get their students involved.

"Our students who are on the Occupational Course of Study track are required to have 240 community service hours as a part of their curriculum," she said. "This project is a wonderful way for our students to meet those requirements."
