Free aviation seminar to be held at Wayne County Airport
Wayne Community College will host one of four aviation safety seminars by aircraft composite expert Mike Busch being sponsored by the state Department of Trans- portation Division of Aviation Safety and Education section.
The free seminar, called "Arm Your Composite Toolbox," will be held from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 27 at the Wayne Community College Aviation Systems Technology Building at the Wayne Municipal Airport.
The other seminars will be held at Charlotte, Greensboro and New Bern.
The seminar is for aviation maintenance technicians, inspection authorization personnel, airplane repair personnel, repair station employees and pilots interested in the history of composite materials, as well as why composites are used in the construction of certified and experimental aircraft. The seminar will look at an historical review of composites, material utilization, inspection-damage assessment and records management.
Busch will discuss the process of making repairs on all types of composite aircraft, as well as demonstrate how a technician can inspect for, locate and repair "hidden damage" often associated with many repairs. There will be reviews of the necessary paperwork associated with making repairs on composite aircraft and how technicians can get help from the aircraft manufacturers.
People who attend the seminar can receive two hours of credit in the Aviation Maintenance Technicians (AMT) Program and two hours of Inspection Authorization (IA) renewal credit.
The seminars also are sponsored by the North Carolina FAASTeam (a network of volunteer aviation professionals who promote aviation safety through education, training and outreach), Craven Community College's Aviation Maintenance Department, Wayne Community College's Aviation Systems Technology Department and the GTCC Aviation Department.

Annual Sweet Potato Festival to be held
SNOW HILL -- The third annual North Carolina Sweet Potato Festival will be Oct. 29-30 in Snow Hill at the Greene County Recreation Complex on N.C. 13 South.
Events will be held Friday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m.
The event will feature food, activities, games, contests and live entertainment.
Music will be provided by The Holiday Band, Bailey Smith and Moe Lowrey and The Backyard Band on Friday night.
On Saturday, the shows will feature Jim Quick & The Coastline Band, starting at 1 p.m., followed by Trainwreck, the Mighty Saints of Soul and The Embers.
Friday night local stage entertainment is free. Concerts in the grandstand area on Saturday requires tickets, which are $12 in advance and $15 at the gate.
Tailgate spots are $100. They include 10 admission tickets as well as a parking sport. Self-contained cooking is permitted. Coolers are welcome but no glass bottles, fortified wine or liquor. Coolers and IDs will be checked. To reserve a spot, call (252)747-3446.
A 4-H rabbit and poultry show will be held Saturday. Other activities will include pony rides, hayrides, a petting zoo, rock wall climbing and a bungee jump.
Parking is free. Pets are not allowed, except service animals.
Former North Drive teacher finalist in principal awards
Syreeta Smith, a 1993 graduate of Goldsboro High School and a former elementary school teacher at North Drive, has been chosen as one of five finalists for assistant principal of the year in Wake County.
She is assistant principal at North Forest Pines Elementary School in Wake County. She was a third-grade teacher at North Drive Elementary School in Goldsboro from 1997 until 2003.
She is the daughter of Belinda Whitley Smith and Donald R. Rouse.
