Wayne Regional Fair Manager Milton Ingram said this morning that rain moving across the area could make opening day Thursday "iffy" but that fair officials are hoping for the best.

Forecasts call for skies to clear Thursday afternoon. The gates at the county fairgrounds are scheduled to open at 4 p.m. Ingram said fair officials will meet with officials of Powers Great American Midway, which operates the rides, early Thursday and decide whether the midway should open as scheduled, or wait a day.

The fairgrounds already has received 7 inches of rain this week, Ingram said, with another 4-6 inches expected today and tomorrow. But the fairgrounds is on sandy land and large areas near the exhibit buildings have been paved, so fairgoers shouldn't have too much trouble with footing, he said.

Ingram said that even if the rides are closed Thursday, that the livestock shows and other competitions will go on "rain or shine."

When the raindrops stop, the fair, roundly considered one of the best in the state, will proceed, Ingram said.

"The moment it lifts, we will be ready to rock and roll," he said.
