The first Wayne County Junior Miss Scholarship program will be held on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre.
But it is actually the second year for the local event.
It was introduced in the area in 2009 by Casey Chudy, a Junior Miss for Barren County, Ky., in 1999 and a military wife whose husband, Kendall, is stationed at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
Last year drew only one contestant, Tara Warren, then a senior at Wayne Early/Middle College High School. She represented Wayne County at the state's at-large program and participated in the 2010 national program in February.
This year there are three contestants, and they will be vying for the title Wayne County Junior Miss and a share of $2,500 in cash scholarships. The winner will go on to compete in the N.C. Junior Miss program, an official preliminary of the America's Junior Miss program, in February 2011.
The contestants, all high school seniors, are Meghan Cunningham, Bryna Havenook and Brooke Smith.
Ms. Cunningham, of Walnut Creek, is attending Parrott Academy. For her talent, she will play the piano.
