The Wayne County Historical Association and Wayne County Museum are preparing for upcoming events including a "Heroes" exhibit, a youth photography contest and a concert by the Donald Underwood Thompson Trio.

The new exhibit will feature a special presentation by members of the Goldsboro Fire Department, who will discuss changes in firefighting equipment over the years. The firefighters will bring a 1919 fire truck, the Mary Alice, along with one of the newest trucks for the discussion.

The fire department has plans to restore the Mary Alice and hopes to use the event to launch the restoration campaign, museum director Terry Williams said.

The "Heroes" exhibit presentation will be Sept. 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the museum.

A youth photography contest began Aug. 17 and will continue to accept entries until Sept. 24. Students in grades 4-7 and 8-12 are invited to participate. Prizes will be awarded to the top three entries in each age division.

Participants may take photos of historic buildings or artifacts, including houses, architectural detail of buildings, outhouses, barns, commercial buildings and other in Wayne County. Entries should be of subjects at least 50 years of age.

Entries may be submitted to the Wayne County Museum or the Wayne County Public Library main branch on Ash Street. The entries will be judged and winners will be notified by Oct. 4.

For more information or to receive an entry form, contact the museum at 734-5023 or at waynecountymuseu@bellsouth.net.

Additionally, the Donald Underwood Thompson Trio will perform at the museum Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. The Trio performs a mix of high-energy blues, vintage rhythm and blues, classic honky-tonk and rockabilly music.

The Wayne County Museum, located on William Street, is open Tuesday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday through Friday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday 12-4 p.m. or by appointment.
