Old-fashioned fun awaits visitors to Charles B. Aycock Birthplace's Second Saturday event Aug. 14 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The theme will be "A Stitch in Time."

There will be the bluegrass sounds of Sapony Creek, quilt displays by the Cotton Club Quilters Guild of Goldsboro and weaving, spinning and quilting demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Children can try their hands at spinning and practice weaving on a small loom.

From 1 to 3 p.m., there will be a presentation on Alamance plaid quilts by Lynn Lancaster Gorges, textile historian and textile conservator and owner of Historic Textiles Studio in New Bern. Her presentation will cover the history of the first textile mills in North Carolina, the history of textile production during the Civil War, the history of plaid fabrics and the use of plaids in quilts. It will be held in the Ida H. Williams Auditorium.

Ms. Gorges will arrive an hour early to display quilts for visitors to look at. Those attending are encouraged to take their own family quilts that have plaid fabrics in them. The quilts will be dated and Ms. Gorges will identify the quilt pattern.

Visitors can also get a jump on their holiday shopping with vendors selling items such as shawls, purses, dolls, belts, bookmarks and dog leashes from weaver Bonnie Pulver of Woven Dreams and visual art pieces from Toni Ruth Murgas of Mermaids-N-More Art Studios.

There will also be food for purchase from Now Faith Church.
