When Wayne County commissioners meet Tuesday morning they are expected to schedule a special meeting for July 23 to choose a replacement for District 2 school board member Shirley Sims.

Prior to that session, on July 21 and 22, the committee charged with making a recommendation to commissioners will meet to interview candidates interested in the seat.

The interviews will take place starting at 2 p.m. in room 111 at the Jeffreys building on North John Street.

The July 23 special session, and Tuesday's regular meeting, will be held in the commissioners' meeting room on the fourth floor of the county courthouse annex.

Tuesday's meeting will get under way with an agenda briefing at 8 a.m. followed by the meeting at 9 a.m.

Scheduling of the special session is on the consent portion of the agenda.

Ms. Sims, who has moved to Garner, officially stepped down from office on June 30.

An eight-person committee, including commissioner Chairman Jack Best, organized last month and came up with a list of questions to ask candidates for the office.

The deadline for people to submit their resume and letter of intent is 5 p.m. on July 12. They should be submitted to Marcia R. Wilson, Clerk to the Board, Wayne County, P.O. Box 227, Goldsboro, N.C. 27533-0227. All applicants will be subject to a background screening. The telephone number is 731-1445.

The person must reside in District 2.

Candidates thus far are Ven Faulk of Dudley, a former candidate for the school board; Joyce Hatch of Mount Olive, who, according to the Board of Elections, actually lives in District 4 and would be not be eligible to serve; Lawrence Durham of Dudley, who is the cousin of committee member Robyn Wade; Len Henderson of Dudley; and Dr. Dwight Bernard Cannon.

Whoever is appointed would complete Ms. Sims' term that expires in 2012.

In other business Tuesday, commissioners will consider several planning-related items.

Public hearings will be held at 9:15 a.m. on rezoning requests by Tri-County EMC and B&D Management. The Planning Board has recommended that both requests be approved.

Tri-County officials want to rezone roughly 7.56 acres adjoining the company's existing facility on U.S. 117 Alternate South at Dudley from Residential-Agriculture 20 to Community Shopping.

The existing site already is zoned Community Shopping.

The change would allow the company to use what is now a vacant lot to expand the operation and for equipment storage.

B&D Management has petitioned the county to rezone approximately 12.3 acres from Residential-Agriculture 20 to Residential 10.

The property is located on the north side of Potts Road. The zoning is being sought in order to expand an existing mobile home park.

Commissioners also will consider a final plat for a minor subdivision, two lots, for owner/developer Harvey L. Jordan II. The land is located on the north side of Community Drive just west of N.C. 581.

The Planning Board has recommended approval.

Following the meeting, commissioners will meet as the Board of Equalization and Review to talk about a special use permit for Young's Auto Salvage on U.S. 117 Alternate at Dudley.

Commissioners last month rezoned property at the salvage yard to allow the business to expand.

However, even with the zoning change, a special use permit is required.

Commissioners will consider appointing Daryll Overton to the Southwestern Wayne Sanitary District board.

Overton would replace long-time board member and chairman Jean Hood who recently retired.

Other items on the consent agenda include:

* Declaring property at 804 E. Elm St. as surplus property and authorizing its sale. The property is jointly owned by the city and county.

* Amending the septic permit fee for 2010-11. The Wayne County Board of Health last month approved an increase in the septic permit fee from $200 to $250. The change requires an amendment to the county budget's fee schedule.

* Declaring property at 300 E. Pollock St. in Mount Olive as surplus property and authorizing its sale. The property is jointly owned by the town of Mount Olive and the county.
