Wayne Special Olympics athletes earn state medals

Wayne County athletes recently participated in the Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games in Raleigh, earning honors in track and field, aquatics, powerlifting and golf.

Twelve athletes competed in walking and running events, the shot put and the long jump. The team, coached by Dean and Kathleen Parrish and Darlene Britt, won several medals -- Moses Bland and Scott Britt each won one gold and one bronze; Marcus Cox, one silver and one fifth-place ribbon; Jonathan Delano, one gold and one silver medal and a fifth-place ribbon; Brian Hammonds, two gold and one silver medal; Angela Keyes, two silver medals and a fifth-place ribbon; Shannon Moore, one silver medal and a sixth-place ribbon; Miguel Sheffield, one silver medal and two fourth-place ribbons; Michael Solomon, one gold and two bronze medals; Jaqueline Spearman, two silver and one bronze medal; and Dorothy Wilson, one silver and one bronze medal.

The aquatics team, coached by Karen Sellner and Donna Countryman, competed in free-style, backstroke, breast stroke, relay races and assisted flotation events. The team consisted of Heather Pardue, two bronze medals; Jenifer Cruz, one silver, one bronze and one fifth-place ribbon; Angela David and Leah Jones, one gold medal each; Connor Laluz, two bronze medals; Jessie Martinez, one gold, one bronze and one sixth-place ribbon; and David McRoy, one fourth-place ribbon.

Ryan Hood, coached by Rex Hood, competed in powerlifting and won two gold and one silver medal.

Local athletes also competed in golf. The team was coached by Rich and Debi Walderman.

Bob and Stephen Hannun participated in the 9-hold alternate shot event, earning a silver medal. Erica Walderman competed in the 9-hole individual stroke play and won the gold medal.
