SMITHFIELD -- The Downtown Smithfield Development Corp. and the Smithfield Parks and Recreation Dept. will sponsor the city's annual "Friends of the 4th" fireworks celebration at the Historical Smithfield Town Commons on Front Street on Monday, July 5.
"With the recent changes in state law requiring fireworks operators to receive additional licensing and training, it left a lot of communities scrambling at the last minute to find qualified operators," said Chris Johnson, executive director of the Downtown Smithfield Development Corp. "There just weren't enough individuals out there qualified without having to pay a very premium price to have it on the Fourth."
Beginning at 5 p.m., the festival will be filled with games, and musical entertainment for the entire family. The celebration will conclude with a fireworks display at 9:30 p.m.
