The Wayne County Solid Waste Department Hood Swamp convenience site on West Hill Drive (off of Highway 13) has been expanded to take the usual refuse as well as to provide additional containers for household scrap metal items, furniture and appliances.

It is the latest convenience site to be expanded over the past five years. The others are Grantham, Rosewood, Pikeville, Seven Springs and Mitchell Road.

The expansions were made to better serve its customers and to help citizens in their efforts to recycle, said Tim Rogers, director of the Solid Waste Department.

"We wanted to provide options for people," Rogers said. "We looked at sites where we could expand and take in more items, so that people didn't have to drive all the way to Dudley to get rid of those items.

"This latest expansion, which is off of Highway 13 and is also known as the Hood Swamp site, was completed about two weeks ago. We have two more acres out there to accommodate the additional containers."

Rogers said the county tried to pick central locations because it wasn't possible to offer the service at every convenience site.
