Boy Scout Trey Owens holds the U.S. flag as he and his fellow Troop 8  Scouts bow their heads in prayer during the flag retirement ceremony at New Hope United Methodist Church on Monday evening. Monday was national Flag Day and new Scouts to the troop collected 157 flags from local churches, schools, the Boy Scout Council and American Legion Post 11 to properly retire them. The collection of the flags served toward the Scouts' national honor patrol service project. The proper way to retire the flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, is to burn it, according to the U.S. Flag Code.
