Graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2010 in Wayne County Public Schools will begin this weekend, with 1,189 seniors receiving diplomas from the six traditional high schools.

Another 16 students have already graduated last month, from the district's seventh school, Wayne Early/Middle College High School, on the campus of Wayne Community College. This is the fourth graduating class for the school. Six members of the latest class also earned associate degrees from WCC.

Thursday is the last day of classes for the county schools.

Commencements kick off on Friday evening, starting with Goldsboro High School at 6:30 p.m. on the football field.

This is the first year the ceremonies have been held outdoors since 2003, officials said. In recent years, they had been moved inside to the school's gymnasium.

With 123 candidates for diplomas, valedictorian is LaKiya Campbell, a Gates Millennium Scholar. She plans to attend A&T University to study biology.

Charnice Taylor, salutatorian, will also attend A&T, majoring in accounting.

Rosewood High graduation will begin at 7 p.m., on Branch Pope football field.

The school has 122 candidates this year.

Kylie Glisson, valedictorian, will attend N.C. State University in the fall, majoring in animal science.

Salutatorian Kailey Adams will attend East Carolina University and has not declared a major.

Three ceremonies will be held on Saturday, starting with Eastern Wayne High at 9 a.m. on the football field. The school has the largest pool of seniors, with 299.

Warner Underwood is valedictorian. She plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill, majoring in global studies.

Alex Lloyd, salutatorian, will major in chemical engineering at N.C. State University.

At 10 a.m., Charles B. Aycock will graduate 291 students in ceremonies on the athletic field.

Courtney Sheeks, valedictorian, plans to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy, majoring in math.

Salutatorian Neal O'Hara will attend N.C. State University in the fall and double major in computer and electrical engineering.
