Two area residents were recognized for service to the Girl Scouts during the third annual meeting of the North Carolina Coastal Pines region, held recently at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Lillie Thompson was awarded the Leading the Way award, given to a Girl Scout volunteer who provides significant support to the Girl Scout leadership development program and have demonstrated a spirit of loyalty and dedication to the organization and council.

Ms. Thompson is an American Red Cross instructor who shares her time and talents with adults by offering them required courses and with girls by offering babysitting classes, as well as a service unit manager, mentor and coach to the leaders in her area.

She also played a vital role on the reorganization committee prior to the merger of two Girl Scout councils to form Girl Scouts North Carolina Coastal Pines on Oct. 1, 2007.

Numeral Guard awards were also given to those earning more than 20 years of service to Girl Scouts, combined youth and adult years. Ms. Thompson has 35 years of service, while Judith King, also of Wayne County, was recognized for having 30 years of service.
