Dozens of area middle school students will test their reading skills on Friday, during Wayne County Public Schools' 24th annual Battle of the Books competition.
The quiz bowl-style contest is specifically designed for students in grades six through eight. Contestants must read 27 books chosen by a statewide committee, and the competition tests students' comprehension of the books.
The event will kick off at 9 a.m. in the Dillard Middle School auditorium, and is open to the public.
All nine public middle schools will participate, including Brogden, Dillard, Eastern Wayne, Grantham, Greenwood, Mount Olive, Norwayne, Rosewood and Spring Creek.
"Reading comprehension is a fundamental skill needed in every subject area," said Olivia Pierce, WCPS executive director for community relations, instructional media and technology. "The Battle of the Books is a fun and popular competition offered by our district to motivate middle school students to read. "
