Stan West checks two-week-old tobacco plants in a greenhouse on Ballance Farms near Fremont on Wednesday. The young, fragile plants will grow rapidly and soon be ready for transplanting. West said they most likely be moved to their permanent home outdoors in May. Thousands of acres of tobacco are grown in the county each year.
