MOUNT OLIVE -- A Hispanic man found injured on Kelly Street early on Monday morning later died of his injuries, and police are struggling to identify him.

Police Chief Ralph Schroeder said police only have a first name, "Arturo," to go by in their investigation.

Investigators were able to determine that the man, who appears to be in his 20s or 30s, lived at an address on South Center Street.

However, more information has been difficult to obtain.

"We know that he lived in Mount Olive for a short period of time ... but all we know is the name that they gave us," Schroeder said late on Tuesday afternoon.

The chief said early this morning that there was no new information on the death.

The man had abrasions on the right side of his face, but police are not ready to release a theory as to how he sustained those and other injuries.

The man is about 5 feet 4 inches tall and has a scar on the left side of his face approximately two inches long, starting at his left eyebrow and continuing around his left eye, police said.

He weighed about 108 pounds, and had a thin black mustache and a goatee, police said.

The man was found around 2:39 a.m. on Monday, and was initially transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital.

Due to the severity of his injuries, he was taken by medical transport to Pitt Memorial Hospital, where he died about 15 hours after being found, police said.

Police said he was known to walk along the Center Street and Cleveland Drive areas of Mount Olive.

Anyone with information about the man's identity is asked to call the Crime Stoppers hotline at 735-2255, or Mount Olive police at 658-5031, extensions 102 or 104.
