FREMONT -- An early morning fire destroyed the home of a longtime Fremont dentist, the town's fire chief said.

Fire Chief Danny Tillman said the home of Dr. Calvin Fuller, who had recently moved to Raleigh, was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived about 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

"Oh yeah. It was fully involved. The whole thing," Tillman said.

Tillman said the single-story, wood frame home was a "total loss."

The fire took about an hour to bring under control, he said.

There were no injuries to any occupants, as the home was vacant. Fuller had moved to Raleigh within the past few weeks, but occasionally stayed at the home, authorities said.

The fire remains under investigation and has been assigned to Detective Sgt. Shawn Harris, the fire chief said.

Wayne County Fire Marshal Bryan Taylor said he would wait until Harris' investigation was complete before making any comment.

"I would hate to say anything that would jeopardize that investigation," the fire marshal said. "I know that he (Harris) has been working on that pretty diligently today, just trying to get some answer to questions ... before we go any further."

Ben Reid, the Fremont officer who acted as the police lead in the fire, did not return a phone call for comment.
