ALBERTSON -- The Albertson community will celebrate a tradition on Saturday that dates back to the 1940s -- the George Washington Day Fox Hunt.

The actual hunt was abandoned years ago. Today the event is a field trial for dogs and the emphasis now is food, fellowship, fun and raising funds for the Ruritan Club, fire department and the recreation center.

The event will be held at the Albertson Ruritan Community Building on N.C. 111.

Activities gets under way early with a breakfast from 5 to 8 a.m. at the Ruritan building. The cost is $6 per person.

A lunch of barbecue and fish stew will be served from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The cost is $6 per plate for barbecue. The fish stew, which usually goes fast, will cost $6 for all a person can eat.

Last year, 171 dogs were entered. The dogs are judged on their speed and drive. No animals are injured or killed during the event, organizers noted. A total of 30 trophies will be awarded.

Last year's event grossed about $2,500 for each of three organizations. The Ruritan portion is for the upkeep of the building and projects the club conducts during the year.
