The Arts Council of Wayne County is looking for local people to volunteer as docents during the upcoming traveling Smithsonian exhibit.

They are needed from Aug. 7 through Sept. 18.

Volunteers must be at least 16. They will lead visitors through the New Harmonies: Celebrating American Roots Music exhibit, answer questions and serve as representatives for the Arts Council.

No experience is necessary.

There will be four two-hour training sessions on Tuesday evenings in July from 6 to 8 p.m. During the training, docents will receive information about the exhibit and all of its elements. Docents will be required to attend all four sessions and work a minimum of one shift a week for the entire six weeks the exhibit is here. Each shift lasts about 2 1/2 hours. Tentative shifts will be Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 4:30 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 12:30 to 3 p.m.

"You will gain valuable experience while giving back to the community," said Sarah Merritt, Arts Council director. "You will have an opportunity to work with the Smithsonian exhibit, meet interesting people, have satisfying experiences and share information with visitors."

There will be a docent information session April 27 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Arts Council. Those attending will learn more about the volunteer opportunity. Refreshments will be served. Reservations are required by e-mailing sarah@artsinwayne.org or calling 736-3300.

Applications may be downloaded from the Arts Council's Web site at www.artsinwayne.org and clicking on classes and programs and New Harmonies docent program or by calling the Arts Council.
