MOUNT OLIVE -- Organizers for the community's annual Heart Walk are optimistic they will make their $35,000 goal despite the recession. Last year's walk raised more than $33,000.

The 2.5-mile walk will be held Saturday, Sept. 26. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at the Mt. Olive Pickle Co. The walk will start at 9 a.m.

The walk began in 1971 and has grown to be one of the most successful in the state. Peggy VanVoltenburg and Peggy Hester are chairing the event. Mrs. Hester and her mother, the late Polly Waters, who suffered from heart disease, started the walk.

Some 125 people representing 13 teams are expected to participate in the walk. The teams have held a variety of activities including yard sales, cookouts, bake sales, raffles and one-on-one contributions.

They also are selling paper hearts and heart strings that will be displayed on the day of walk in memory or in honor of someone. They cost $10.

There is a "Doctors Who Care" poster. Doctors who donate $100 can have their name placed on the poster, which will be displayed on the day of the walk.
