Tavaris Lane

The suspect in a shooting last Saturday was apprehended in Wilson with assistance of police there, a Goldsboro police detective reported.

Goldsboro police had been searching for Tavaris L. Lane, 33, since he allegedly fired at Marlow Eugene Holmes, 34, of Seaboard Street.

Police spokesman Chad Calloway said there was some sort of altercation between Holmes and Lane outside of the Economy Inn on West Grantham Street, just before 11 p.m. on Aug. 15.

That led to the shooting of Holmes, who was still in critical condition at Wayne Memorial Hospital as of Friday evening.

Calloway and lead detective Doug Bethea said the Wilson Police Department was very cooperative in the investigation, lending manpower and using a specialized police unit to gain information about the suspect.

The suspect was still suffering from a gunshot wound he suffered during the Aug. 15 altercation, according to police.

Calloway reported Lane was seen at Wayne Memorial Hospital for the injury before being taken before a magistrate, who jailed Lane under a $50,000 bond.

Holmes had had prior trouble with the law, and had a trial date of Nov. 2 for a charge of felony possession of cocaine, according to court records.

Calloway said he did not believe the charges had anything to do with the alleged shooting.
