Goldsboro residents are being urged to contribute to the annual food drive sponsored by postal letter carriers.

The drive will be held Saturday, May 9.

The goal this year is to collect 18,000 pounds of non-perishable food to benefit seven local charities and food banks: City Mission of Goldsboro, Community Soup Kitchen of Goldsboro, Community Crisis Center, The Salvation Army, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Wayne Uplift Domestic Violence Shelter, and United Church Ministries will be receiving the non-perishable food that is collected in Wayne County.

The campaign is sponsored in partnership with the United Way.

The local drive is part of a national effort by more than 1,300 chapters of the National Association of Letter Carriers to help fill local food banks.

Volunteers from participating agencies, area churches, the Goldsboro Target Store and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base will join carriers in sorting, loading, and distributing the food. Security-Atlas Storage and City Mission are lending large trucks to help in the storage and distribution of the collected food to participating agencies.

The drive will cover residents with a Goldsboro Zip Code, including 27530 through 27534.

Postal customers wishing to donate items can place them by their mailbox on the morning of the food drive or take their donation to either the Berkeley Station Post Office or the Downtown Post Office from May 2 - 11 and place it in the hamper in the lobby.

Food drive organizers are asking patrons for non-glass containers only and to remember to check expiration dates to make sure that no expired food is donated.
