Kindergarten pre-registration in Wayne County Public Schools will be held at all 15 elementary schools on April 24, from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m.

The child must be 5 years old on or before Aug. 31 to register for kindergarten for the coming year. Parents/legal guardians must present an official birth certificate and immunization records. Birth certificates may be obtained from the Register of Deeds office in the county of the child's birth.

Proof of residence is also required. Parents must present two sources of documentation such as utility bills, tax bills, deed of trust, rent receipt or any document which clearly proves current resident status. Military families living on base may present a letter from base housing as proof of residence. Children are enrolled in the school district in which they live, and school assignments are made by the local school system.

North Carolina law requires that before kindergarten registration, a child must receive a health assessment and his/her shots. It must be documented on an official North Carolina Health Assessment Report form available from the county school system, the county health department and most pediatricians' offices. If needed, parents/legal guardians will be given a health assessment form during pre-registration which must be completed by the family physician and returned to the school by the first day of classes on Aug. 25.

For a complete list of enrollment requirements and other information, visit the district Web site at www.waynecoun tyschools.org.

Anyone unable to register on the designated day should contact the school as soon as possible. If uncertain about which school the child will attend, call 731-5900 or visit the administrative offices at 2001 E. Royall Ave.

Transfer requsts are also available, and will be accepted during the month of June for schools where space is available.

Students currently attending kindergarten will not attend school on registration day, as it is considered a vacation day for those students.
