Students make quilt for charity

Some Eastern Wayne Middle School students are using sewing and quilting skills learned in their family and consumer science class to help others.
Students recently completed a quilt for the Raleigh chapter of Project Linus, which makes and distributes quilts to seriously ill or traumatized children.
This is the second quilt the classes have completed for a deserving child. The first, done in the fall, won first place in the Wayne County Fair. The quilt then went to a hospitalized little girl.
"It is projects like these that should remind us all how positive career and technical education is not only for the students, but for the community at large," said Jessica Horton, the school's Family and Consumer Science teacher.
She is especially proud of her students, who have demonstrated growth not only in their sewing skills but in personal development.
"This quilt project was a really nice experience because I felt like we created something that will change someone's life," said student Brandon Gray. "I feel warm-hearted because the child who receives it will know someone cares."
"Creating this quilt really makes me feel good about doing something for a sick child," added student Malori Price. "I think each patch shows our unique personalities and the effort we put into sewing."
