City Council expected to vote on zoning

The Goldsboro City Council is expected to vote tonight on the contested Maplewood subdivision rezoning proposal and address a number of consent agenda items.
The rezoning of the northeast corner of Berkeley Boulevard and Maplewood Drive proposed by S. Dillon Wooten Jr., which would change the property from Office and Institutional-1 to Neighborhood Business, drew opposition from Maplewood residents who cited concerns about traffic and safety issues. The Goldsboro Planning Board voted March 30 to recommend denying the rezoning proposition.
The council will also vote whether to close a section of North Center Street from West Holly Street to Royall Avenue. A study determined about 400 cars a day pass through the area.
Items on the consent agenda include site and landscape plans for the new Cherry Hospital on West Ash Street, a Bojangles restaurant on Spence Avenue, an Auto Zone that will move into the Rex Appliances building on Berkeley Boulevard and the construction of the new Eastern Chapel Missionary Baptist Church on North Carolina Street. The council is also expected to vote on an application to change the name of Courtyard Circle to Day Circle, a move supported by the Planning Board, and a request submitted by Tim Melton to rezone the southwest corner of North Spence Avenue and U.S. Highway 70 East.
The council will also vote on a resolution regarding the U.S. Department of Justice, Recovery Act: Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Formula Program which would provide Goldsboro Police Department and Wayne County Sherrif's Office with a $271,859 grant that would be used to purchase digital in-car video systems for officers.
Also related to the police department, the council will vote on federal property forfeiture program and tax remittance of state controlled substances to the police.
Councilmembers will discuss a resolution for the Veteran Government Bond, Stamp and Coin program, and Mayor Al King is expected to make proclomations designating April as Child Abuse Prevention Month, Month of the Military Child, Jazz Appreciation Month and Healthy Marriage and Responsible Fatherhood Month.
In other business, the council will discuss:
*An informal bid for public facilities and improvements for Parks and Recreation playground equipment.
*Transfer of streets from North Carolina Department of Transportation to the city of Goldsboro.
*A street closing proposed by Willie Cartagena, executive director of the Hispanic Community Development Center for the Viva Goldsboro Festival on May 2.
*The appointment of to the Stoney Creek Park board of directors.
