Wayne County Public Schools has been recognized for its public relations efforts, receiving awards for its 2008 annual report and the district Web site.

During the annual N.C. School Public Relations Association's Blue Ribbon awards ceremony for effective communications, 108 awards in 11 categories were presented. Wayne County was among 28 districts honored.

The annual report, the school system's first, was released in late January, 2008. Entitled "Reflecting Back...Looking Forward," it showcased student achievement and other district facts, as well as efforts and initiatives introduced and implemented across the county.

Ken Derksen, public information officer for WCPS, was recognized for creating the annual report.

The school system's Web site, www.waynecounty schools.org, is managed by Gene Jackson, instructional technology specialist/Web master. In addition to announcements and updated information for parents, it features links to each individual school in the district.
