Confederate monument at Whitehall Memorial Park to be dedicated Saturday

SEVEN SPRINGS -- A ceremony to dedicate a monument to the 13 Confederate soldiers killed at the Civil War Battle of Whitehall will be held Saturday at Whitehall Confederate Memorial Park on Budd Fields Road near Seven Springs.
The battle was fought in 1862 between Union forces driving westward toward Goldsboro and Southern troops defending the CSS Neuse, a gunboat under construction at the time.
The monument also honors the men who served aboard the Neuse. The gunboat's remains are on display at a state park in Kinston.
The event will be held at 11 a.m., with featured speaker Earl Ijames, curator of the North Carolina Museum of History, who will talk about slavery.
The park belongs to the National Sons of Confederate Veterans. The granite marker was donated by members of the Edmund Ruffin Fire Eaters Camp No. 3000, of the Virginia Division of the SCV.
The stone was once a floor support from the Marshall in Richmond, Va., built in 1818.
