Resident shoots man trying to get in her home

A woman shot and wounded a drunken man early Saturday when he approached her door and allegedly threatened her after a night of celebrating his 21st birthday, police said today.
Denise Dees, 50, told Goldsboro police that a man approached the door at her home on Ridgewood Drive, pushed on it, and then issued a threatening statement.
"She (Mrs. Dees) said that he said something threatening. She picks up her weapon and fires a shot through the door, hits him in the shoulder. It's what we call a 'grazing' wound," police spokesman Chad Calloway said.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight, investigators said.
Calloway said that excessive alcohol consumption had Bradley Allen Broft, 21, of Monroe Lane, in an amnesiac stupor.
"I don't think he knows where he is -- he thinks he's somewhere else," Calloway said.
Broft was transported to Wayne Memorial Hospital, where he was treated and released, the police spokesman said.
After the incident, Broft talked with his father and was distressed about having blacked out from excessive alcohol consumption, Calloway reported.
"They're not bothered (so much) by the fact that he was shot, they were bothered by the fact that he did something like this, going up to a woman's door," Calloway said.
After Broft was released from the hospital, he expressed an interest in meeting with Mrs. Dees, who said she also wanted to meet with Broft, the spokesman said.
Police arranged for the meeting, and both parties exchanged apologies, Calloway said. No charges have been or will be filed, police said.
"She (Mrs. Dees) was just as apologetic as she can be. She was completely within her rights," Calloway said.
The police spokesman said the 21-year-old man found out the hard way that abusing alcohol can have unintended consequences.
"It was just a lesson learned in a bad way," Calloway said.
