WCC arts and humanities fall schedule announced

The Foundation of Wayne Community College's arts and humanities program is offering a full calendar of events during the coming months, including trips, discussions and election-related fare.
The fall season kicks off in September with a Piedmont Arts Trip to study the works of architect Alexander Jackson Davis.
The September 12-14 weekend will include stops at the state capitol in Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Greensboro, where the group will take in a performance of "King Lear" at the N.C. Shakespeare Festival in High Point. The cost will be $25 per person, plus lodging and meals.
"Political Satire" will be offered the four Monday nights of October, beginning Oct. 6 and led by Bill Brettman, director of the arts and humanities program in Room 101 of the Walnut Building at 7 p.m.
The first three sessions focus on Aristophanes, father of political humor, Vaclav Havel and Jon Stewart. The final session, Oct. 27, will have a guest presenter, Dwayne Powell, political cartoonist for The News & Observer.
Cost of the four-week program is $20 per person, $35 per couple.
Another tour group is scheduled for the weekend of Oct. 10-12, led by Jewel and Randy Sauls. The "Return to Gettysburg" is limited to 20 participants, with the cost set at $45 per person.
On Monday evenings during November, the subject will be "The Power of Art" with four artists featured -- Caravaggio, Bernini, Turner and Van Gogh. It will feature a DVD and discussion led by Brettman. Sessions begin Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. in Walnut 101. Fee is $20 per person, $35 per couple.
Then on Thursday, Nov. 6, will be a trip to Nasher Museum at Duke University --"From El Greco to Velzaquez: Art during the Reign of Phillip III." Tickets for the exhibit are $12 each.
Another trip, to the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences, is planned for Thursday, Dec. 4, to see the "Dead Sea Scrolls" exhibit. Tickets are $15 and must be purchased in advice.
Plans are already in the works for the spring, with one date already being announced for a "Jeffersonian Journey" April 24-26. Included in the Virginia trip will be visits to Monticello, James Madison's Montpelier, the UVA Rotunda and Lawn, and Poplar Forest, Jefferson's retreat home outside Lynchburg.
Registration in advance for any of the arts and humanities events is strongly encouraged, Brettman said.
