Commute slow on U.S. 70 due to bridge repair

Many morning commuters had a slow go of it today on U.S. 70 west of Goldsboro, and delays are expected to continue at least through tomorrow, as state Department of Transportation crews forced traffic into one lane to finish up repairs on the bridge near William Street.
DOT division bridge maintenance engineer Jimmy Marler said exposed reinforcing steel and "concrete issues" made the project necessary.

Morning commuters traveling eastbound along U.S. 70 in Goldsboro move at a snailÕs pace this morning as road crews set up for another day of bridge repair work.
But the bridge, he added, is safe.
"Overall, the bridge is pretty sound," Marler said. "But we still need to go ahead and make these repairs."
His hope is to see the project completed within the next day, but Marler said some factors are out of the DOT's control.
"We would like to go ahead and get finished but we have to coordinate with the railroad," he said. "We have to have (someone from the railroad) with us at all times while we're working. So if he gets called off, we have to stop. We work when we can."
So drivers might plan on leaving the house a few minutes early Thursday -- or simply take another route.
