Duplin well fees up

KENANSVILLE -- The permit for inspecting private drinking water wells has been increased to $200.
The new fee was approved by Duplin County commissioners at their Monday night meeting.
Ila Davis of the Duplin County Health Dept. said the county's old fee of $75 had not been increased since 1997.
She told commissioners the increase was needed because of new statewide private drinking water well rules that go into effect July 1.
The new rules will require at least three site visits during the permitting process.
The visits will include:
* locating the well site to meet setback requirements
* inspecting the well casing
* inspecting final well head construction and collecting water samples from the well.
The samples will include an inorganic sample, a microbiology sample and a nitrate/nitrite sample. The state lab will charge $57.95 for the kits needed to take the samples.
Wayne County charges $175, Sampson County, $275 and that Lenoir, Pender and Onslow all charge $200.
