MOUNT OLIVE -- Dr. Tommy Benson has joined Mount Olive College as chair of the Department of Education.

As associate professor of education, Dr. Benson said he has high hopes for the role.

"I want to continue the development of the programs in this department in a way that will benefit North Carolina and our surrounding counties by producing teachers that are of extremely high quality," he said.

He said the decision to join the MOC team was an easy one. He has been an "avid supporter" of the college, having also served as a trustee and chairman of the Duplin County church dinner program, which supports the college financially.

Benson and his wife Shirley reside in Hampstead. They have three daughters.

Benson received a bachelor of arts in education from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a master of arts in education from East Carolina University, and a doctor of education degree from Nova Southeastern University.

He was employed as a teacher in Edgecombe and Duplin counties.

He has been a principal, director of programs for exceptional children, assistant superintendent and superintendent.
