The Tuscarora Council Boy Scouts Council has won three national marketing awards for its communication program.

The awards, which are part of the 10th Annual President's Award for Marketing Excellence competition, are sponsored by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America. More than 330 entries were received from councils across the country.

The Tuscarora Council won first place for its overall marketing campaign that featured an in-depth assessment of prior communications and a survey of Scout families and volunteers. Using this input, the council launched its campaign in mid-2007. The campaign included improvements to the Web site www.bsanc.org, creation of an e-news system and introduction of a family-centered magazine that shared stories about Scouts in Duplin, Johnston, Sampson and Wayne Counties.

Individual awards were also received for the magazine and e-news system as well.

A council representative will receive the awards later at the BSA National Meeting, which will be held May 21 through 23, in San Diego, Calif.

The campaign and its supporting materials were created by Kim Keller of Keller Marketing Communications. Keller, who is based in Pikeville, helps companies develop communication tools such as newsletters, Web sites, speeches and surveys. She also provides seminars on communication issues such as crisis management, writing for the Web and other topics for businesses across eastern North Carolina.
