City Council to discuss new downtown bar

The Goldsboro City Council is expected to make decisions on a bar, restaurant and the condemnation of two dilapidated dwellings and will hold one public hearing during its Monday night meeting.
The council will likely approve a conditional use permit proposed by Jeff Darwin to operate a tavern, deli and place of entertainment on the northeast corner of East Walnut and North John streets. The council approved a permit to allow a wine bar previously at the location, but since the business has stopped for more than six months and the applicant proposes additional uses for the space, a new permit is required. Hours of operation for the business would be 11 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 1- 9 p.m. Sunday. A public hearing was held on April 21, at which five people spoke in opposition and two spoke in favor.
Council members are expected to approve a site and landscape plan for a Bojangles' restaurant on the north side of West Grantham between Elizabeth and Paul streets.
The council is also expected to condemn dwellings at 500 N. John St. and 203 S. Slocumb St.
A public hearing will be held on housing and non-housing needs for the city before submitting the 2008-09 Annual Action Plan. The plan is a tool used to help determine the use of Community Development Block Grant funds and home investment partnership programs received from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
A conditional use permit requested by Myco Supply Co. to allow for the storage of propane gas on the north side of West Ash Street will be discussed, as will a rezoning request by The Potter's House to change property on the east side of Bryant Street from residential to office and institutional. The council also will discuss closing Tart Street from Branch Street to its terminus; a site and landscape plan for a church in the former Holloway's barbecue building; and specifying the grass clippings pickup ordinance to include clippings generated by landscaping, tree or yard maintenance contractors.
