WCC students recognized

Four Wayne Community College students participated in the statewide community college system's annual academic excellence awards luncheon recently in Raleigh.
Current students Wendy Womble and Tabitha Parkton were among 116 students --two from each of the 58 community colleges in the state--recognized for academic accomplishments. Demetrius Sykes, a 2007 graduate, was cited for his leadership skills. And Alison Rawleigh was on the program as part of the event's entertainment.
Mrs. Womble is a medical assisting major and holds offices in the college's chapter of the Medical Assisting Students Association.
Ms. Parkton is working on an associate in applied science degree in human services/substance abuse after earning an associate in arts in criminal justice last year. She served six years in the Air Force and two in the Air Force Reserves. She plans to continue her education and earn bachelor's and master's degrees in social work.
Sykes received the Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award, sponsored by the N.C. Community College Presidents' Association, recognizing students who are active on their campuses and possess traits that will help them be community leaders. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps Special Forces. While at WCC, Sykes was a Student Government Association officer and a founding member of the Minority Male Mentoring Group, in addition to coaching youth sports. He is currently studying to be an athletic trainer at East Carolina University.
Miss Rawleigh, a 2007 graduate of Wayne Early/Middle College High School and currently a student at WCC, was chosen to sing two selections at the event.
