MOUNT OLIVE -- The Opey Dew and Jenny J. Jeanes Family Endowed Scholarship Fund was recently established at Mount Olive College.

A native of Wilson County, Jeanes has been active in higher education for over 48 years. He joined Mount Olive College as vice president and dean in 1979, currently serving as vice president for special services and director of the college program at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

According to Jean F. Ackiss, director of church support, the endowment was originally established as a surprise for Jeanes 70th birthday. When he learned of the gesture, though, he wanted to include his wife's name and make it a family endowment, she said.

The couple met while working at Chowan College, he as a chemistry professor and Mrs. Jeanes as secretary to the president of the college. Married for 45 years, they have three sons: Dale in Clemmons, N.C. ; James in Mount Olive; and Paul in Baltimore, Maryland.

Jeanes is a member of the Mount Olive Original Free Will Baptist Church. His wife belongs to First Baptist Church of Mount Olive, where she is Christian education director and Sunday School director.

The endowment fund will provide scholarships for qualified recipients who are rising seniors seeking degrees in science.
