Local businesses can find out the latest information on immigration rules and politices at a seminar sponsored by the Wayne County Latino Council March 28.

The seminar will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Wayne Center. The cost is $15 per person.

Topics will include how to properly fill out I0-9 forms; how to respond to letters from the Social Security Office saying an employee's Social Security number does not match his or her name, protecting your business in an audit, the increased fines for immigration violations, and the latest in proposed legislation regarding immigration. A question-and-answer period will follow.

Also, there will be information for agencies that serve immigrant families.

Presenters will be Gerard Chapman, a board-certified immigration law specialist, and Gema Hall, an immigration lawyer from Greensboro.

The council decided the seminar was needed after it received a phone call from a local business owner who had received a "no-match" letter for one of his employees and didn't know what to do.

"We realized that our local businesses are having issues with the no-match letters and are going to have more issues in the future as new legislation is coming into place," said council member Sandra Head. "We felt like we could help local businesses with the immigration issue."

She said the seminar is a good opportunity for Wayne County businesses and agencies to learn more about immigration work regulations, which is a complex issue. Businesses that don't have immigrant employee issues now may have them in the future, she noted.

"It's going to help bring light to a light of the issues that people are having," council Chairman J.R. Bravo said.

Those who have questions for the seminar may e-mail them to Sandra.Head@waynegov.com and they will be forwarded to the presenters so they may address specific issues at the seminar.

Register by calling 731-1520 by March 24. Checks should be made to County of Wayne and sent to Sandra Head, P.O. Box 68, Goldsboro, 27533.
