Commissioners to take look at progress on new animal shelter

The Wayne County Board of Commissioners is facing a relatively light agenda Tuesday.
On tap for discussion -- but not action -- are an update on the progress of the new animal adoption and education center on Clingman Street and a proposed change to the Wayne County Zoning Ordinance near airports.
The former, which will be given by county Animal Control Director Justin Scally, will let the commissioners know where construction stands on the new county animal shelter. Work on the $1.8 million facility began in October. So far, to help offset that cost, nearly $500,000 has been pledged or donated to the shelter.
The latter item is a matter the county Planning Board has been discussing for several months.
Basically, it would create an airport height overlay zone prohibiting structures taller than 500 feet around the Goldsboro-Wayne Municipal Airport, the Mount Olive Airport and Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
A two-mile zone is already in place around the Goldsboro-Wayne airport, and plans are for the one being established around Mount Olive to be similar.
Seymour Johnson's zone would be seven miles, though tighter restrictions, which would not change, already exist closer to the base.
The proposal has the support of the Mount Olive Town Council and Seymour Johnson officials, county Planning Director Connie Price said.
He explained that a restriction of 500 feet would only prohibit such structures as T.V. towers, and is not expected to interfere with economic development.
"In most cases, the height it allows is not a big deal," he said.
The commissioners' meeting, which is held in their chambers in the Wayne County Courthouse will begin at 9 a.m., with a briefing session at 8 a.m.
